American Flagfish
The American Flagfish (Jordanella floridae) is a unique and colorful freshwater fish known for its resemblance to the American flag. Native to slow-moving rivers and marshes in Florida, this species is relatively small, growing to about 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6 cm) in length.
American Flagfish are characterized by their vibrant colors, with males displaying red and blue-green stripes and a pattern of dots that resemble stars, making them a striking addition to aquariums. Females are generally less colorful but still exhibit a beautiful pattern.
These fish thrive in slightly cooler water, ideally between 68-75°F (20-24°C), and prefer well-planted aquariums with plenty of hiding spots. American Flagfish are peaceful but can be semi-aggressive with slow-moving or long-finned tank mates, so they do best with similarly active species.
As omnivores, they enjoy a varied diet, including high-quality flakes, algae wafers, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp. They are also known for grazing on algae, helping to keep aquariums clean. With proper care, American Flagfish can live for 3-5 years, making them an attractive and functional choice for freshwater tanks.
