Description:

The Pomacanthus navarchus, commonly known as the Majestic Angelfish, is a large and striking species of angelfish native to the Indo-Pacific region, specifically found around Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vanuatu. This angelfish is admired for its vibrant and bold coloration, as well as its large size, making it one of the most spectacular angelfishes in the aquarium hobby.

The Majestic Angelfish is easily recognized by its royal blue body, with contrasting yellow and orange accents on the fins and face. The juvenile coloration is quite different from the adult, with juveniles being mostly dark blue or black with prominent yellow markings. As the fish matures, it develops its signature blue body with yellow-edged fins and a bright yellow face, especially prominent in mature specimens. The large size, stunning color patterns, and elegant appearance contribute to its common name, the "Majestic Angelfish."

Adult Majestic Angelfish can grow up to 14-16 inches (35-40 cm) in length, making them one of the larger species of angelfish. These fish are known for their graceful swimming and majestic appearance, especially in larger aquariums or reef tanks.

Care:

  • Tank Size: The Majestic Angelfish is a large species and requires a minimum tank size of 180 gallons for a single individual. Larger tanks (200 gallons or more) are ideal to ensure that the fish has enough space to swim and establish its territory, especially as it matures. Due to its large size and territorial nature, it is best suited for experienced aquarists who can provide adequate space and care.

  • Water Conditions: The Majestic Angelfish thrives in stable, clean water conditions. The following water parameters should be maintained:

    • Temperature: 74-80°F (23-27°C)

    • Salinity: 1.023-1.025 specific gravity

    • pH: 8.1-8.4

    • Ammonia, Nitrite: 0 ppm

    • Nitrate: Less than 10 ppm

Regular water changes (10-20% every two weeks) are crucial to maintaining good water quality. A high-quality filtration system and protein skimmer will help maintain optimal water conditions, which is particularly important in a larger tank.

  • Diet: The Majestic Angelfish is an omnivore with a preference for sponges, algae, and small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, it requires a varied diet to ensure it receives the proper nutrients. Key food items include:

    • Sponge-based foods (commercial or fresh sponge)

    • Algae sheets (nori or spirulina)

    • Frozen foods (mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other small invertebrates)

    • Vegetable matter (spirulina flakes, pellets)

    • High-quality angelfish pellets or flakes

Providing a balanced diet with plenty of sponge-based foods is crucial to mimicking their natural feeding habits. This diet helps maintain healthy skin, vibrant coloration, and overall health.

  • Tank Setup: The Majestic Angelfish requires a reef-like tank setup with ample live rock for grazing and hiding. It is important to create plenty of open swimming areas and caves for the fish to retreat to, as it can be somewhat territorial. As a large species, it needs space to explore and establish its territory.

A sandy substrate is ideal, although not essential. The water flow should be moderate to strong, mimicking the currents found in its natural habitat. Proper filtration is crucial to keep the water quality high in a large tank.

  • Social Behavior: The Majestic Angelfish is generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks. It is important to house it in a larger tank (minimum of 180 gallons) to give the fish adequate space to establish a territory and reduce stress. In a large enough tank, it can be kept with other peaceful fish, but caution should be exercised when adding other large angelfishes, as they may compete for territory.

It is best to avoid keeping multiple Pomacanthus species or other large angelfishes in the same tank, as they may fight for space. Ideal tankmates include:

    • Tangs (e.g., Yellow Tang, Purple Tang, or Achilles Tang)

    • Wrasses

    • Butterflyfish

    • Clownfish

    • Gobies

    • Blennies

The Majestic Angelfish generally does well with other reef-safe species, as long as there is enough space and hiding spots. Avoid overly aggressive species, such as triggerfish or large wrasses, which may harass the angelfish.

  • Companions: The Majestic Angelfish is compatible with many reef-safe fish species, especially those that won’t compete for the same territory. Best companions include:

    • Wrasses

    • Gobies

    • Tangs

    • Butterflyfish

    • Clownfish

    • Other peaceful reef species

Be cautious when mixing with other angelfish species, as they may not get along unless the tank is sufficiently large to prevent territorial conflicts.

Additional Considerations:

  • Size and Space: Due to its large size, the Majestic Angelfish needs a minimum of 180 gallons of tank space. Overcrowding or keeping it in too small a tank can lead to stress, aggression, and health issues. A larger tank is always preferable, especially if keeping multiple species or a more complex reef setup.

  • Temperament: The Majestic Angelfish is generally peaceful but can become territorial as it matures. It is essential to provide plenty of hiding spots and swimming space to minimize aggression. Keep the tank well-planned with territorial separation and avoid overstocking.
